Until now, to register as married by the Ministry of Interior in Israel, couples had 2 options: to marry according to religious law through the Rabbinate, or to fly abroad for a civil wedding in another country. Today, following the Supreme Court’s decision in the Brill case, the state recognizes Utah marriages that allow couples to marry in a Zoom meeting without leaving Israel. This welcome change allows hundreds of thousands of couples in Israel, including couples where one is Israeli and the other is a foreign national or same-sex couples, to marry without leaving Israel. This is a civil wedding by video conference and it is completely legal, allowing registration as married in Israel.

 

What are Utah marriages?

According to Utah state laws, any two citizens of any country, regardless of religion, race, or gender, can marry in a civil ceremony conducted in Utah in the presence of 2 witnesses, one of whom is a lawyer, with both partners present via video call. Thus, two people of different religions, different nationalities, or even two people in different parts of the world can marry. To help you marry in Utah, we will be responsible for all the bureaucratic procedures, including obtaining a marriage license in Utah; contacting the required witnesses; issuing the marriage certificate and authenticating it with an apostille; registering the marriage with the Population and Immigration Authority in Israel. Are Utah marriages recognized by the Ministry of Interior?

Utah marriages are recognized by the Ministry of Interior. After the wedding ceremony, the officiants will provide a valid marriage certificate signed by the Lieutenant Governor of Utah and send it to the couple and their representing lawyer. With this certificate, you can go to the Israeli Ministry of Interior and register as married in all respects with professional guidance from our office according to the couple’s circumstances.

What is the process and timeframe for receiving the marriage certificate?

The process until receiving the couple’s marriage certificate is generally quick and can take little more than a month, but this of course depends on circumstances. The couple must first provide identification – ID cards or passports to receive the marriage license for the ceremony and fill out relevant documents. Immediately after providing the documents, within just a few days, the marriage approval is received and a date for the ceremony is set. After the ceremony, it takes up to 30 days to receive the marriage certificate with which you can register as married at the Ministry of Interior.

 

In what languages can the ceremony be held?

The ceremony is conducted in English, and it can be conducted with simultaneous translation into Hebrew and Russian.
