Restoring Israeli Citizenship

Citizenship Restoration Process and Legal Assistance

In the process of restoring citizenship after renunciation, the citizenship applicant is required to submit the application while abroad through the Israeli consulate.

Our office specializes in applications for restoring Israeli citizenship and obtaining Israeli citizenship after renunciation, and assists in these cases remotely with professional legal guidance and support, until the applicant can arrive in Israel equipped with all the appropriate approvals.

Reasons for Renouncing Israeli Citizenship

There are many Israelis who have chosen to renounce their Israeli citizenship for various reasons:

  •  The desire to immigrate to a country where multiple citizenships / dual citizenship is prohibited
  •  Tax issues
  • Lack of interest in holding an Israeli passport
  •  The desire to advance to sensitive or security positions in the country of residence
  •  Ideological or other reasons
  •  New immigrants who decided to return to their country of origin

Possibility of Restoring Israeli Citizenship for Jews

When it comes to Jews, there is a regulation from 2005 that recognizes the eligibility of every Jew to immigrate to Israel under the Law of Return, even if it’s a second immigration. In the case of a second immigration, for Jews born in Israel or residents of the territories, the Ministry of Interior will examine that there are no disqualifying factors such as criminal or security issues.

Restoring Israeli Citizenship for Non-Jews

Any other person who wishes to restore their citizenship is required to submit a detailed and reasoned application to the Ministry of Interior, both regarding the circumstances of the initial citizenship renunciation and the circumstances of the request to restore Israeli citizenship after renunciation. This request is approved by the Minister of Interior at their discretion.
